Mental illnesses can take many forms, just as physical illnesses do. Unfortunately, mental illnesses are still feared and misunderstood by many people.

Mental illness directly and indirectly affects all Canadians – whether through a friend, family member, or classmate. For the Little Voice team, mental health has been at the forefront of their journey and has, in many ways, inspired the creativity behind their books, mission and message.

The reality is an estimated 10 to 20% of Canadian youth are affected by a mental illness or disorder – the single most disabled group of disorders worldwide. Surpassed only by injuries, mental disorders in youth are ranked as the second highest hospital care expenditure in Canada. Yet, only 1 out of 5 children who need mental health services receives them.

While the conversation around mental health continues to grow, the Little Voice team wanted to do more than just raise awareness. And so, the Be the Light Campaign was created as a fundraising platform that would donate a portion of each sale of The Lighthouse in support of the National Canadian Mental Health Association. Together, Little Voice and NCMHA hope the Be the Light Campaign will not only support the important conversations around mental health but also the programs and services that will help to build resilience and support recovery from mental illness in communities across Canada.
